1989 Winners
"The Jackie White Competition has become an important part of my development as a writer. More important than the result was the feedback I received from the panel of readers. Plays are always read by multiple readers, so one reader's opinion is never the deciding factor. I can always count on an honest evaluation of my work from the CEC panel. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had with the Jackie White Competition and hope to enter again in the future."

1989 JACKIE WHITE MEMORIAL
PLAY WRITING CONTEST WINNERS
FIRST PLACE: IT'S A HOWL
Tim Kelly, Hollywood, CA
The problem in this fast paced farce is that Wolfbane Academy, dedicated to rehabilitating teenage werewolves, has just been inherited by the former owner's unsuspecting teenage niece. Academy director Dr. King Wolverine decides to take steps to keep the school in his competent (if furry) hands. PUBLISHED BY ELDRIDGE PUBLISHING COMPANY. Musical version also available.
SECOND PLACE: THE TERRIBLE VIZIR OF VADUZ
C. Warren Robertson, Johnson City, TN
The night before taking her prize cow Fern to the state fair, little Mattie has a dream. She and Fern are in a strange land where toys and play are banned, smiling is allowed only when one has a permit, and domestic animals (especially cows - one once kicked the Vizir) are forbidden. How Mattie saves Fern and overcomes the Vizir's prejudices is the basis for this original and humorous play. PUBLISHED BY ENCORE PUBLISHING.
THIRD PLACE: THE TREE OF LIFE
Adam Wernick, Philadelphia, PA
In this charming fable the King of Marmalade chooses his successor by sending his three daughters out of the kingdom to find the (non-existent) tree of life. What will happen to Margaret, Rose, and Camomile during their quest? Clever dialogue, amusing characters and a bit of slapstick in the action make this play a delight to see.
