“Playwrights talk among themselves, and the Jackie White Competition is considered among the ten most significant in America for children’s theatre plays. It is well-respected as a venue which has encouraged the development and production of new works for young audiences, and I’m very proud to have won it.”

PLAY WRITING CONTEST WINNERS
FIRST PLACE: THE PRINCESS WHO BECAME KING
Sylvia Ashby, Lubbock, TX
Lovers Ravi and Parijata flee from home because their fathers, due to the schemes of an ambitious Guru, have suddenly begun to feud. After a dangerous forest journey in which the lovers are separated, everyone ends up at the Bazaar at Malabar where the royal elephant is waiting to pick the next king. Inspired by an Indian tale, this sprightly comedy serves up a tasty blend of love, adventure and intrigue. PUBLISHED BY BAKER'S PLAYS.
SECOND PLACE: WILD BILL
Jean Van Tuyle & Edward Mullen, CA
As this entertaining musical begins, Mrs. Sanborn's fifth grade class has just finished discussing Wild Bill. Suddenly several of the students are granted the chance to go back in time. When they choose Wild Bill's era, they discover that while history portrays Bill as a tough gunslinger, in truth he was helpful to his neighbors and talked his way out of confrontations rather than resorting to violence.
THIRD PLACE: FOLKTALES FROM AROUND THE WORLD
Charles & Helen Rounds, et. al.
These four stories from different countries, told with humor and charm, serve to expose young audiences to the traditions and customs of Greece, Scandinavia, Japan and Rumania. The stories are chosen also to show cultural similarities in ideas and ethics.
