1991 Winners
"The Jackie White Competition has become an important part of my development as a writer. More important than the result was the feedback I received from the panel of readers. Plays are always read by multiple readers, so one reader's opinion is never the deciding factor. I can always count on an honest evaluation of my work from the CEC panel. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had with the Jackie White Competition and hope to enter again in the future."

1991 JACKIE WHITE MEMORIAL
PLAY WRITING CONTEST WINNERS
FIRST PLACE: THE THIRD WAVE
Lawrence Thelen, Redmond, WA
Based on a true story by Ron Jones, The Third Wave explores the dynamics of group interaction. In an attempt to help his class understand how the German people could have condoned the Holocaust of WWII, Mr Jones, a high school teacher, demonstrated all too convincingly how it is possible for any group to unthinkingly follow strong, appealing leadership. This fascinating and timely play is guaranteed to make you think.
SECOND PLACE: PRAIRIE
Judith Zivanovic, Manhattan, KS.
Prairie is a compelling look at life a century ago seen in the story of a young woman who is able to rise to the challenges of her first teaching position. Flashbacks to her childhood show the audience how she has become a strong and appealing person who can cope with the many problems she faces with humor and grace. The play is based on actual diaries and notes of pioneer teachers. PUBLISHED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH DAKOTA PRESS.
THIRD PLACE: THREE TURTLES WHO CHANGED HISTORY
Robert English, Santa Barbara, CA
In this whimsical tale for small children, three turtles named Love, Peace and Justice leave the safety of their pet shop to explore the world. As Love wanders through the Kingdom of Dotswright, his presence unites Prince Y. Knott with the maiden of his dreams. Peace brings an end to war between the Kingdom of Warburg and the Principality of Dotswrong, and Justice is certainly just what is needed in the Dukedom of Jaildom.
