“Playwrights talk among themselves, and the Jackie White Competition is considered among the ten most significant in America for children’s theatre plays. It is well-respected as a venue which has encouraged the development and production of new works for young audiences, and I’m very proud to have won it.”

1992 JACKIE WHITE MEMORIAL
PLAY WRITING CONTEST WINNERS
FIRST PLACE: CROSSROADS CHRISTMAS
Lee Brady, San Francisco, CA
During a family emergency, a spoiled and selfish young girl and her embittered grandmother eventually come to terms with each other. Ally needs a costume for the Christmas Pageant, but her father is ill, her mother is away, and her resentful grandmother won't help. Grandma and Ally work out their problems amid fantasy characters, real people who are just passing through Crossroads, Colorado, and Ally's friends on the school bus. Ally starts to grow up as her fantasies all start having unhappy endings; grandma makes a few grudging changes; and the school Christmas Pageant brings everyone together in a happy ending.
SECOND PLACE: WESTWARD HO!
Craig Sodaro, Silverthorne, CO
This is the story of the unknown people who settled the West told in a comical and entertaining manner. Unlike the scenario of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show (as the ghosts of Calamity Jane, Sitting Bull and Wyatt Earp point out), the West was really settled by ordinary people facing extraordinary problems. Westward Ho! is fast paced and fun to watch. PUBLISHED BY PIONEER DRAMA SERVICE
THIRD PLACE (TIE): THE LAVENDER HOUSE
Charlene Livsey, St. Louis, MO
This heartwarming and humorous story of a loving family's struggles to survive and better themselves is set in a railroad town in 1929-30.
THIRD PLACE (TIE): THE WHITE DOVE WITH THE GREEN TAIL
Huynh Quang NHoung & J. L. Parenteau, Columbia, MO
A Vietnamese version of the Cinderella story, this tale shares more than Tam's finding her Prince Charming. Audiences find out what her stepmother and stepsister did next, and how true love overcomes even death in the end.
