1996 Winners

“Playwrights talk among themselves, and the Jackie White Competition is considered among the ten most significant in America for children’s theatre plays. It is well-respected as a venue which has encouraged the development and production of new works for young audiences, and I’m very proud to have won it.”
- Evan Guilford-Blake, 2006 Jackie White Memorial Play Writing Winner

"The Jackie White Competition has become an important part of my development as a writer.   More important than the result was the feedback I received from the panel of readers.  Plays are always read by multiple readers, so one reader's opinion is never the deciding factor.  I can always count on an honest evaluation of my work from the CEC panel.   I am grateful for the opportunities I have had with the Jackie White Competition and hope to enter again in the future."

1996 JACKIE WHITE MEMORIAL
PLAY WRITING CONTEST WINNERS

FIRST PLACE: HAUNCHO’S XELLENT XMAS

Ned Campbell, Columbus, GA

Young Kendall and his friend Holly go on a fantasy adventure to find Kendall’s kidnaped cat. Guided by Kendall’s hamster Hauncho, the trio explores a world of fantasy which is connected to reality by Hauncho’s magic “Habitrail.” This well plotted play shows that you can’t get something for nothing and that there is always a price to pay. The four virtues of truth, prudence, justice and fortitude say something to the audience in a very entertaining way. This is a great Christmas play for audiences of any age.

SECOND PLACE: DITCH DAY

Tim Kelly, Hollywood, CA

In this old fashioned farce in a modern setting, confusion and hilarity abound. When students at Handblender High ditch classes the day before the senior prom, the principal vows to track them down and bring them to justice. The students meanwhile, deeply involved in a treasure hunt, tangle with the police, gangsters who hide a diamond necklace in a beach bag, and a succession of other interesting characters. Fast paced and fun, this is a play for all ages. PUBLISHED BY PIONEER PUBLISHING SERVICE.

THIRD PLACE: TALES OF MOLLY MALLOY

Sylvia Ashby, Lubbock, TX

This group of three folk tales is tied together by the author’s delightful creation, Molly Malloy. Self assured and bright enough to solve everyone’s problems, Molly manages not to marry the squire in the first tale, finds her prince in the second tale, and saves the kingdom in the third. Clever dialogue makes this a play audiences of any age would enjoy.
