1999 JACKIE WHITE MEMORIAL
PLAY WRITING CONTEST WINNERS
FIRST PLACE: OPERATION OLLIE
John Urquhart Portland, ME
Teenagers who express themselves by skateboarding clash with town officials and members of the church whose parking lot they use for skating in Operation Ollie. A lack of communication and resulting bad feelings between the two groups lead to a hard earned lesson in cooperation in this well written and though provoking look at a problem many communities find difficult to solve.
SECOND PLACE: THE SOMEWHAT TRUE TALE OF ROBIN HOOD
Mary Lynn Dobson Atlantic Highlands, NJ
Join Robin and his spoon-wielding band of Merry Men (and women) as they battle evil Prince John (Boo! Hiss!) and the Sheriff of Nottingham with the help of Lady Marian, the Town’s Guy, and the all-powerful Technical Director. You’ll laugh out loud at this wild and farcical retelling of a well known legend in The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood. PUBLISHED BY DRAMATIC PUBLISHING.
THIRD PLACE: THE BLACK HEART OF JIAO LONG
Gene Longen University Place, WA
Set in ancient ChinaThe Black Heart of Jiao Long, a beautifully written verse play based on the Dorothy Hoge story “The Black Heart of Indri,” tells the story of Jiao Long, half man and half toad. Born of witchery, blessed with magical healing powers yet bitter and angry because of his misshapen body, Jiao Long searches for a soul possessed of true beauty and innocence to help him break the spell holding him enslaved in a creature’s body. Amusing villagers and a wise Mandarin add charm to this dramatic fairy tale.
