2000 Winners
"The Jackie White Competition has become an important part of my development as a writer. More important than the result was the feedback I received from the panel of readers. Plays are always read by multiple readers, so one reader's opinion is never the deciding factor. I can always count on an honest evaluation of my work from the CEC panel. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had with the Jackie White Competition and hope to enter again in the future."

2000 JACKIE WHITE MEMORIAL
PLAY WRITING CONTEST WINNERS
FIRST PLACE: MUSICAL!
Stephen Murray Worcester, MA
This delightful musical comedy chronicles a high school musical from audition through opening night. Characters include the mother of all stage mothers, a meddling football coach, a mysterious stage crew, and a typical cast of high school actors who encounter the usual difficulties (and some very unusual ones too) as they muddle through the school’s first production for twenty years. A varied blend of musical styles in the delightful songs ( Dance Audition, Duct Tape) moves the story along.
SECOND PLACE: THE POWER OF ONE
Frumi Cohen Yardley, PA
Based on real events that took place in Montana in 1993, this thought provoking musical tells the story of what happens when a young girl takes a stand against ethnic intimidation. When a rock is thrown through the window of her best friend’s house during Hanukkah, Caroline must struggle against the fear and indifference of their neighbors. In the process she learns about the power of friendship, and we all discover that one person really can make a difference.
THIRD PLACE: THE WAR OF INDEEPENED ANTS
Ross Mihalko Denver, CO
The ants colonize a mound of dirt. They make honey for the Queen bee of Ing-land. Desiring more land and power, the queen sends her forces (the yellow jackets) to fight the frogs. War is expensive, so the queen taxes the ants. The ants rebel and win their freedom. Does this sound familiar, historically speaking? Yes, it’s the War of Independence (In-dee-pene-dAnts) fought by our little insect and amphibian friends. This clever, pun-filled parody of American history will leave you chuckling.
HONORABLE MENTION: WATER AND POWER
