2003 Winners

“Playwrights talk among themselves, and the Jackie White Competition is considered among the ten most significant in America for children’s theatre plays. It is well-respected as a venue which has encouraged the development and production of new works for young audiences, and I’m very proud to have won it.”
- Evan Guilford-Blake, 2006 Jackie White Memorial Play Writing Winner

2003 JACKIE WHITE MEMORIAL
PLAY WRITING CONTEST WINNERS

FIRST PLACE: THE KLEMPERER’S NEW CLOTHES: A HOMESPUN TALE

Music by Norman Weiss; Book & Lyrics by William Squier, Stamford CT.

This sparkling new musical is an update of the old tale with a different twist. Willard Calhoot is a poor tailor in a small mid-western town early in the 20 th century. Despite frantic attempts by daughter Jinny, Klemperer’s Mercantile Emporium will not carry Willard’s well made but simple clothes. Then brother Millard turns up and hatches a scheme to convince Mrs. Klemperer, the leader of high society in town, to order a very special dress from brother Willard. With fresh, funny (“Slop a Little Hogwash”) and at times poignant songs and fast, amusing action, this delightfully different adaptation will enchant audiences of all ages.

SECOND PLACE: DRAGON RIBBONS

Jane Alden, Eastsound, WA

Based on an old Chinese fairy tale, Dragon Ribbons introduces us to a peddler of ribbons and the inhabitants of his village. In this beautifully written script we meet a peddler of uncommonly good heart and kindness as well as villager Wu Long, whose gambling skills ensure he always wins. When the Peddler’s wish to find adventure is granted, he sails away on the river accompanied by an unfriendly dragon. The Peddler’s good heart wins out over the dragon in the end, and he is delighted to be able to return at last to his home village.

THIRD PLACE: EDWARD MATTHEW JACOB MILLER IV

Colin Doughan, Omaha, NE

This lighthearted tale introduces us to a young prince who, despite the evil machinations of Dr. Sneed and his henchman Slobber, saves his father’s kingdom by energizing the people through his dancing. As the story progresses, Edward Matthew Jacob Miller IV learns that everyone “dances” in his own special way, and that when people work together evil can indeed be overcome.
